  1. Mickey...thank you...It’s pleasant to know a Mother was greatly appreciated. My mother seldom received any expression of love or appreciation...in this patriarchal society, I suppose many mothers feel unimportant and neglected.

  2. And some people think war promotes violence...why...how can that be?

At least 121 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have committed a killing or been charged in one in the United States after returning from combat, The New York Times reported Sunday.

  3. Mickey...I am very sorry to hear the news about your Mother. No words can console you now, but please know that all of those who have witnessed the relationship between you and your Mother have been enriched. We have all seen that a very special kind of love is possible.

  4. RMJ said it, having read of the ongoing treks to Texas, I sympathize, while at the same time feeling your gratefulness for the relationship.

  5. Losing beloved family or friends is a learning experience nobody wants; yet we all must inevitably receive.
You were very fortunate to have a Mother who not only nurtured and imparted wisdom but who you also counted as a dear friend.

A life well lived is something to be celebrated.
I raise my mug to Mrs. Z.

    Be well, Mickey Z.

  6. Many condolences to you and your family, Mick…

this post is a great tribute to your mom.

  7. RMJ gets my vote for quote of the day, and I can only add the principle that’s informed me whether the passing of my grandmother or the cat I had for half my life: the suffering is over. Sadness follows, but there are good memories, too.

I have that Walt Whitman quote on my ‘fridge. It stops at “...great poem,” though.

  9. Dear Mickey:  so sorry to hear the news about your mother passing away.  Like Rosemarie, I think that no words can console you now.  Please accept my sympathies ..

  10. I also share RMJ’s thoughts.  My hope for you Mickey is that your road ahead will eventually smoothe and that you find more lucidity of thought.  Take care.

The photo of your Mom, so memorable, really hits home.  I love that photo.

  12. Mickey and Michele - we are thinking of you. The week that my mother died, Calvin and Hobbes was running a series about a baby raccoon. It really meant a lot to us that week.

  17. Sorry for your loss, Mickey. I had the same experience, lung cancer in my case, when I was 23. It was an anti-wake-up-call that cleaned up any remaining life-illusions. It’s so good that you obviously had a great relationship with her with no outstanding regrets.

  21. You have been in my thoughts all week, and I’m sending you love and warmth (through the internets, can you feel it?) Your mom was a wonderfully caring and compassionate woman, and she passed those traits on to you… as another commenter said above, we are our mothers’ children.  You were blessed, and so was she.  Sending you all my love… xo

  25. Dear Mickey and Michele,
Loss is hard… THere is a blessing in knowing that it is coming so one can say I love you and thanks and all those things that NEED to be said… No regrets. No matter what it sucks.  My mom died of lung cancer, 13 years now, and it still sucks but it does get easier to remember the smiles and laughter.  Your mom sounds like a wonderful woman whose legacy will live on in all those she touched.  Take care and STAY GOLD!
    Love, Michele (SteppingStone)

  27. Langston Hughes sez:

    I loved my friend.
    [She] went away from me.
    There’s nothing more to say.
    The poem ends,
    Soft as it began--
    I loved my friend.

  31. Mickey,

So sorry about Ann.  I just heard.  She was a wonderful woman and your tribute is lovely.  I am glad you got to spend some quality time with her before her passing.  I am also really glad to have had the opportunity to know her.

You and your family are in our prayers.

  33. Hey Mickey,
Sorry to hear about your Mom!  I don’t remember her that well since the last time I saw her was like 1980 when we lived on the same block but I could tell that she was proud and adored you and your father too!  Best Wishes and keep in touch.
